I recommend using a 7 day Japan Rail Pass, if you can use it to travel from Tokyo, Osaka and back to Tokyo. With the trips to Kyoto, you get good value out of the pass.

What about Intercity transport ( Tokyo & Osaka ) ?
The JR pass will not cover all trips am I right ? What should we take?

Hi Mo,

You can use the JR Pass to travel on the Hikari Shinkansen between Tokyo and Kyoto/Osaka. This takes about 159 minutes/one way.

The JR Pass is also valid on local JR lines within cities like Tokyo and Osaka, covering most of both cities.
