Hi,
We will be travelling to Japan in December. Noticed that there are so many train lines and train operators and got a bit confused. Not to mention about bus transportation. Need help on what type of passes to buy. Our itinerary as follows:-
Day 1: Arriving in Tokyo (Narita airport)
Day 2: Travelling to Hakodate (Hokkaido)
Day 3: Hakodate - Lake Toya
Day 4: Lake Toya - Noberibetsu - Lake Toya
Day 5: Lake Toya - Sapporo
Day 6: Sapporo - Otaru - Sapporo
Day 7: Sapporo
Day 8: Sapporo - Tokyo (most probably by flight)
Day 9: Tokyo - Matsumoto - Nagano
Day 10: Nagano - Tokyo
Day 11-15: Spending few days in Tokyo but will be visiting Fuji 5 lakes &/ Hakone. Most probably to different districts Shibuya, Shinjuku, Harajuku, Ginza...etc. Flight back from Narita airport.

Also, we are still open if Sapporo back to Tokyo will be better or to airport nearby Matsumoto/Nagano will be preferred, main concern on transportation of luggages.

Thanks in advance.

Hello there,

I must say it is hard to match a JR Pass to your itinerary. A 14 day JR Pass or even 7 day JR Pass, would be super cost efficient if you'd return to Tokyo by train. It takes about 7hours by rail. While flying will be faster, going to the airport and waiting for your flight and luggage may make the time difference bearable. As such I would suggest considering rail option.

If you prefer flying, then I'd look at using a 7 day JR Pass for day 1-7 and maybe a JR East Nagano Pass for the rest.

Kind regards,
Daniel

Thanks Daniel-San for your quick insightful reply. Im wondering if Im to travel back from Sapporo to Tokyo by JR and I take the 14 day JR pass. Will Mt Fuji (5 lakes) &/ Hakone transportation be covered? Also, I have another 1 day left on the final day. What will be the best for the last day?
Thanks in advance.

Hi!

It would depend on where around Fuji you'd visit, we have a detailed write-up here:

I would just take your last day in Tokyo and use it for shopping :) There's a lot of cool stuff around Japan and I'm sure you may want to take some home. Doing it on the last day also means you do not have to carry it around!

I also recommend a visit to Takao-san, its a pleasant hike and on a clear day, you'll have a good view of Fuji from the top. Hakone is also really nice but leave early if you want to do the full hakone circle.

Hope this helps,l
Daniel
