Hi,

We will be vising Japan in May. Can you please tell us if it makes sense to buy a 14 day JR pass for our itinerary? Or does a 7 day pass make more sense with the number of days that we will be in Tokyo?

Our preliminary itinerary is:
day 1: arrive Narita at 1:30pm; take the Narita Express to Shinagawa, and transfer to Shinkansen train to Kyoto
day 2: Kyoto sightseeing
day 3: Kyoto; day trip to visit Toyota plant
day 4: Kyoto sightseeing or possible day trip (nearby)
day 5: Shinkansen to Hiroshima, overnight in Hiroshima
day 6: train and ferry to Miyajima in the morning; Shinkansen to Osaka in the evening
day 7: Osaka
day 8: Osaka; day trip to Himeji Castle and Kobe
day 9: Osaka; day trip to Nara
day 10: Shinkansen to Tokyo
day 11: Tokyo
day 12: Tokyo; Hakone Loop day trip
day 13: Tokyo
day 14: Narita Express to airport, flight home

Thank you!

Hello there,

I could already tell that you could make some very good savings with a JR Pass compared to purchasing normal rail tickets, from reading your itinerary. I also added your itinerary in our JR Fare calculator and you could save at least 32,370 JPY per person using a 14 day JR Pass.

A couple of notes when you open the Fare Calculator link:
1.) I used Nagoya station for travel to the Toyota plant. This is as far as the JR Pass would take you, from there see this website for details.

2.) While not in the Fare Calculator, the JR Pass also covers the Ferry to Miyajima and sight seeing bus in Hiroshima.

3.) You will see a couple of places double, this is to accommodate for day trips. For instance Osaka - Nara is Osaka - Nara - Osaka.

4.) I used Odawara station for Hakone. Odawara is the Shinkansen station for Hakone and the JR Pass will take you there. From local non-JR transport is required to explore Hakone. Here a Hakone Free Pass can be useful.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
