Should I buy 21-day or 14-day JR pass?

Hello Daniel-san,

I will visit Japan for 21 days in 05/2023:
1. May 1-10: Narita to Tokyo (Shinjuku station); Mt. Fuji; Nikko; Hakone
2. May 10-14: Kyoto
3. May 14-19: Osaka (JR-Namba station); Kobe; Himeji Castle; Nara
4. May 19-21: back to Tokyo. Last trip from Shibuya station to Haneka

I would like to ask if I should buy 21-day or 14-day JR pass? Do I need to purchase any regional pass?

Best Regards,
Tan-san (Texas)

Hi Tan-san,

I think your best option is to go for the 14-day JR Pass and then optimize your travel plans a bit around it. Think of including travel to Nikko, Hakone and (where possible) Fuji. Then just use an IC card, like Suica for the other days in Tokyo.

Travel to all the other cities is included in the JR Pass.

Hope this helps :)

Hello Daniel-san,

The way I understand, I can buy limousine bus ticket from Narita to Tokyo and use Suica to travel around Tokyo. At the end of my stay in Tokyo I will purchase 14-day JR pass for Tokyo to Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe, Himeji, Nara and back to Tokyo/Hanenda airport. Is that correct?

Thank you,
Tan

Hi Tan-san,

Yes, that's correct :) There are many ways to get into Tokyo, from cheap buses to the more expensive Narita Express. The limousine bus is a nice middle option both in terms of comfort and cost.
