Are there any requirements for reserving seats on the train? If we want to go to say, Osaka; do we just show up with our pass or do we call ahead?
Do we need to show you our passports? How would we do that? Thanks!

Hi there,
You can reserve seats once you have exchanged your JR Pass in Japan. There's no other requirement.
Passports need to be carried on you at all times by Japanese law, JR Staff may also ask you to show it to verify that you are the user of the JR Pass. This however does not occur a lot.
Hope this helps,
Daniel
