Does the JR pass cover all national and local rail services or just selected ones?
Scope of coverage
Hi there,
It covers all JR lines nationwide, both the Shinkansen and local JR lines.
There are some local railways operated by private sector railways and these are not included. An example is the Fujikyu line between Otsuki and Kawaguchiko.
How extensive is the JR network around Tokyo? Or is it separate like our overground and underground services?
Yes, it is comparable with underground and overground services. The overground (urban JR Network) is covered, the underground (Tokyo Metro) is not. Overall the JR Network around Tokyo is quite extensive, expecially the JR Yamanote loop line and JR Chuo (central) line cover most major stations and areas.
Hope this helps,
Daniel
