Can I get on the shinkansen without booking a destination and get off when I feel like it with the JR pass?

Hi there,

The answer to this is yes and no. Let me go into detail. The JR Pass allows you to get on any JR train and just take a non-reserved seat.

However, the Hayabusa Shinkansen from Tokyo - Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto only has reserved seats. So you'll have to go to the ticket office and get a reservation if you wish to travel on this train. This can be done up to 5 minutes before departure so it is almost the same as just hopping on :)
