I have booked a trip to Japan for my wife and daughter Jan 24-Feb 6, 2025 and would appreciate guidance on rail transportation options. There base locations are as follows:
Tokyo—24th and 25th
Nagano—26th and 27th. (Note staying at a Ryoka which is difficult to access and is closest to the Yudanaka Station.)
Kyoto—28th through 30th
Hiroshima-31st
On Feb 1, flight from Hiroshima to Sapporo and then train to Tomamu.
Tomamu—Feb 1st-2nd
Feb 3rd-6th Sapporo. Will roundtrip to Otaru for 1 day. (Note worried about accessing transportation due to the Sapporo Snow Festival.)

I would appreciate guidance on type of pass or just individual tickets and learning whether they are at risk of getting reserved seats given how tightly they have booked this schedule. Thank you.

Hi there,

For your itinerary it is likely that purchasing your tickets individually will be your most cost-effective option, and considering concerns about reservations, it is probably the option I'd most recommend to you as it would mean that you could prebook some tickets as well to ensure a seat is secured.

Kind regards,

Alexis
