Hi ,

I will be going Osaka (KIX) - Kyoto - Kanazawa - Takayama / Shirakawago - Kanazawa - Kyoto - Osaka (Namba).

** OPTIONAL - if only i have extra time , i would like to cover kinosaki onsen & himeji castle the last few day from OSAKA

I am looking at 2 passes :
- Kansai - Hokuriku Pass ( 7 days ) - Takayama - Hokuriku Pass ( 5 days )

Which pass would be me recommended for me?

And i have some questions :

  • does both passes cover HARUKA Limited Express from KIX to Kyoto Station ?

  • As i am intending to attend shirakawago light up event ( joining tour that don't cover in both pass) , i think it will be a peak period . Am I able to use reserved seats on Thunderbird to Kanazawa from Kyoto & from Kanazawa to Osaka ?

  • for the few stations Toyama to Takayama route (both directions ) i understand that they are closed for repair works. Currently schedule buses are in service from station to station...Will the train route be up by end Jan 2019?

  • is the Hokuriku Shinkansen ( kanazawa - shin-takaoko - kanazawa ) in operation ? Does the passes covers reserved seats?

Hope to hear from you soon.

Thank you.

Hi there,

1.) Yes.

2.) Please read each pass page carefully, for some reserved seats are included for some passes not.

3.) It is too early to say when the line re-opens, I recommend keeping an eye on the JR Central website: http://english.jr-central.co.jp/

4.) It is but you can only take non-reserved seats for regional passes on these Shinkansen.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

Thank you for the above information !

Looking at my itineary , which pass would you recommend ?

I have taken note of the non-reserved seats for regional passes on these Shinkansen. Just wondering ,does it means that if i want to travel on reserved seat , i will have to pay a full fare for the journey seperately?

Also, do you have any idea if thunderbird has any luggage compartment?

Thank you in advanced~

Hi there,

Yes, I'm afraid so. This is to keep the cost of the pass low.

The Thunderbird has similar compartments to the Shinkansen overhead, there is also room for some suitcases at the end of each train car.

As for what pass I'd recommend, I would take the Takayama-Hokuriku Area Pass if you can be back in Kansai before it expires. This is the only pass that also includes the Bus to Shirakawa-go.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
