Opinion on Itinerary and JR pass to use

Hi,

Below are my planned itinerary

Arrive Kansai airport 19 Oct staying 4 nights in osaka till 23 Oct
Plan to do train day trip to Kyoto, Nara
Fly Kansai to Sapporo 23 Oct staying in Sapporo 1 night (bought ticket already)
Train to Asahikawa on 24 Oct stay 2 nights and train to Biei, Furano, Sounkyo.
26 Oct train from asahikawa to Higashi-Muroran (2 nights), train to Noboribetsu and Lake Toya
28 Oct train to Hakodate
29 Fly Hakodate to Tokyo (3 nights) (have not booked flight yet). Is it worth going by train to Tokyo ( I saw the seat reservation is 11360 yen to pay and wondering if its worth since airfare is equivalent)
1 Nov depart from Narita

Which pass should we used (group of 6 adults and don't plan to drive ourselves).

Hi there,

If you want to take the train from Hakodate - Tokyo, thena 7 day JR Pass would be worth it with your other travels. With the JR Pass, you can use the Hayabusa Shinkansen from Hokkaido - Tokyo and is the fastest Shinkansen in Japan. It's worth the experience by itself if you ask me :)

If you fly, then you can look at using a regional pass like the Hokkaido Rail Pass.

Hi Daniel,

Thank you for your reply. Regards my itinerary, is it worth going to Asahikawa if I'm going to miss the autumn foliage that ends mid Oct. Would it be better to stay 3 nigths in sapporo and do day trip to Otaru instead. Any where else would you suggest?

Hi Karen,

Asahikawa does not have that much to see and do, if you only have 3 nights than I would stick to around Sapporo/Otaru and if you really want to make a longer day trip, visit lake Toya. It is very scenic and you can use the JR Pass to travel there.
