Hello experts!!

We are a couple from Barcelona, travelling next month with our baby girl. It will be an adventure!!

I have a doubt in one of my trips using JR pass, I'm sure you can help me.

The best trip I found is as following:

Nikko - Utsonomiya (JR Nikko Line)

Utsonomiya - Tokyo (Shinkansen Yamabiko 208)

Tokyo - Shinjuku - Kawaguchiko (LTD EXP Narita Express 8)

Please, can you confirm me if the LTD EXP Narita Express 8 is covered by the JR pass??

Thanks a lot for your help

Marian, Josep and Laia.

Hi Marian, Josep and Laia,

The Narita Express is generally covered by the JR Pass. However going to Kawaguchiko does not a small extra charge because the last part of the tracks is owned by the Fujikyu railway and not part of the JR Network. A one way would cost around 1,240yen/one way. While without the JR Pass you'd pay around 4,500yen.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

Thanks a lot for your help. Now is clear.

When can we pay the difference?

We plan to make seat reservation when we collect the JR Pass at Haneda airport office. Is it possible to pay there the difference?

Thank you again for your help.

Best regards,
Marian

Hi Daniel!

Thanks for your support and answers.

Please, do you know if it is possible to pay the extra charge for Kwaguchiko train when we made the train seats reservation?

Thanks,
Marian

Hi Marian,

I recall writing up a reply for you but don't know where it went.

In any case, you can buy the difference on board or up-on arrival at Kawaguchiko. There are no penalty fees in Japan for these kind of things and convenience is most important.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
