I will be travelling to Kyushu in July with two companions. I think that this is our final itinerary ( after a zillion drafts). Do you think that the use of the JR pass and SunQ pass is the best way for us to travel? Thank you for any feedback or recommendations, Sarah

Arrive Tokyo for 4 nights
Fly to Nagasaki for 3 nights
Train to Kagoshima for 2 nights 13590 yen, 3 hours
11th Train to Kumamoto for 2 nights 6940, 1 hour
Sun Q Bus to Kurakowa via Aso for 2 nights
Sun Q Bus to Oita for flight to Tokyo for 1 night
Flight home

The Kyushu JR pass for 5 days is 18000 yen. The individual train trips cost a little more.
Northern Kyushu 3 day Sun Q Pass is 8000 yen but I'm not sure how much individual trips cost.

Hi,
You'd barely break even on a 5 day Kyushu Rail Pass - but you could make the trip in just 3 days and save 3000 yen. The bus pass would not pay off with just those 2 trips though.
Nagasaki has a number of impressive sights, but outside the city you might also want to go see Unzen, the Sasebo [island cruise] as well as Huis Ten Bosch.

Kagoshima City has a number of great places to see. Aside from Sakurajima, which is the elephant in the living room, you should not miss the Senganen Garden, plus Shiroyama Park. The ferry ride going over is also particularly relaxing.

If you still haven't had your fill of hot springs (Unzen, Kurokawa, Kagoshima, etc), then there is also Beppu and Yufuin.

Good luck.
