We have a bit of an odd itinerary
My daughter and I are traveling to Japan with my husband on a business trip next week.
We are flying to Tokyo and he will be leaving from the airport to Yokosuko for the week.
My daughter and I will stay in Tokyo for a couple of days then travel on to Kyoto.
He will meet us in Kyoto late in the week and we will return to Tokyo for out flight out Sunday.
Will the JR 7 day pass work with this kind of plan?

Also, when we are in Tokyo and Kyoto how do the local rails work with the passes?

Hi there,

Yes, the JR Pass will be good for this trip. Given that you'd make the return to Tokyo within the 7 day period.

For local trains, you just show the JR Pass when entering the station. After you hop on any train and show the pass again when you exit the station.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
