my family of 6 is travelling to japan and we are not sure if it will be more cost effective to each buy a 7 day pass or to just buy tickets individually.
our plan was:
tokyo - kyoto
kyoto-osaka
osaka - kyoto
kyoto - tokyo

For this route, it would not be cost effective to buy a 7-day JR Pass.
Should you add a little more travel, such as a day trip to Hiroshima, then it could be different.
