Hi Daniel!

My family and I will be traveling to Japan for my brother and mom’s bday this October for 10 days. We are 4 adults and planning on going to Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and Nara maybe. I have been to Japan last 2015 and I used JR pass but haven’t been to Nara and only stayed in Kyoto for half a day. This time we’ll be staying in Kyoto for 4 days and will travel directly there from Narita airport on the 20th. My concern is, can u use the
JR pass if you go sight seeing in Kyoto? Like going to Fushimi Inari, Arashiyama, Golden Pavilion and such? I know in Arashiyama you can. Does JR pass covers going to Nara too? I was thinking renting a car might be a good idea cause my mom doesn’t like to walk a lot. But with cars, you’ll have to pay for Parking, tolls and is a right hand drive which we have no experience at all. I don’t know if we can save more renting a car vs buying a JR pass cause there’s 4 of us. I hope you give me some insights on these. Thank you so much!

Hi there,

The JR Pass can be used for travel to Fushimi Inari, Arashiyama, Uji and more. However, the JR Network around Kyoto is limited to the south and west of the city. As a result, some places like the Golden Pavilion are not reachable by JR.

The JR Pass can also be used to Nara, Nara itself is quite small and can be explored on foot or by local bus.

I would recommend using a 7-day JR Pass if you can included a return Tokyo - Kyoto with it.

Kind regards,
Daniel

if we decide on getting a 7 day JR pass, by the time we reach Tokyo I would only be able to use the remaining 2 days. I will be in Tokyo Oct 25-29 and is planning to stay in Shinjuku. Is there a pass that would cover going to Narita via Narita Express and also the main tourist spots in Tokyo like Akihabara, Harajuku, and Shibuya? Thank you so much.

For the remaining days, it will likely be best to just buy normal tickets or use a Suica card to travel around.
