I will be arriving at Narita Airport in May 2017. Just want to know what type of JR Pass I should purchase. My travel itinerary is as follows:

Day 1 Narita to Toyama
Day 2 Toyama to Tateyama
Day 3 Toyama to Kanazawa
Day 4 Toyama to Takayama
Day 5 Toyama to Matsumoto
Day 6 Toyama to Tokyo
Day 7 Hakone

I also want to purchase the Alpine ticket

How much do I have to pay for the JR Pass and how much for the Alpine ticket.

Is it cheaper for me just to buy individual train ride.

Is there a 5-day pass

Thanks
Jenny

Hi Jenny,

Here's a quick break-down of your ticket prices:

Day 1 Narita to Toyama ¥ 15,510
Day 2 Toyama to Tateyama (not covered by the JR Pass) ¥ 1,200
Day 3 Toyama to Kanazawa ¥ 3,330
Day 4 Toyama to Takayama ¥ 3,360
Day 5 Toyama to Matsumoto ¥ 8,930
Day 6 Toyama to Tokyo ¥ 12,730
Day 7 Hakone ¥ 3,740

This alone adds up to ¥ 48,800 while a 7 day JR Pass is ¥ 29,110. I only did a one way for each trip from Toyama you make but I would imagine you'd do returns for some day trips? In case of a return, double the price of a one way.

The minimum for a JR Pass is 7 days but as you can say, you can make really good savings.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thanks Daniel

I would like to update further and need your advise whether I should buy a 14 day or 7 day JR pass

We are staying 4 nights at Toyama and 6 nights in Tokyo as we are elderly so we decide not to move around too much with our luggage.

Day 1-4 same as above
Day 5 - Toyama to Tokyo, Shinjuku area (explore Shinjuku, Shibuya, Harajuku)
Day 6 - Shinjuku to Hakone and back (explore Kawaguchiko)
Day 7 - Shinjuku to Nara
Day 8 - Shinjuku to Tsukiji Fish Market, Asakusa, Ueno
Day 9 - Shinjuku to Nagoya
Day 10 - Shinjuku to Osaka
Day 11 - Shinjuku to Narita to fly back

Day 9 or 10 may vary if the distance is too long for us to travel. We may then just stay around Shinjuku and relax

Also want to know can we reserve seat using the JR Pass when we arrive from Narita. Can we hop in and out with our JR Pass without making any booking for journey.

Daniel - thank you so much for assisting.
