Hello! I am an old lady traveller who loves Japan and I have been to Japan twice before and used the JR Pass without any problem. I am about to purchase another pass but I am not sure whether to purchase regional passes because I am visiting Kyushu and Shikoku and work my way down to Tokyo.

Here is my proposed schedule:
Day 1: arrive Fukuoka, Kyushu
Day 2-3 Kyushu, Fukuoka and Nagasaki visit
Day 4 travel towards Shikoku and stop by on the way, maybe Okayama
Day 5 To Matsuyama, Shikoku in evening
Day 6 travel to Kochi in evening to meet Japanese friends
Day 7-8 Kochi
Day 9 travel towards Fuji in evening.
Day 10 Fuji area
Day 11-14 Tokyo area

Thank you for any advice or help. I already looked at hyperdia and I was overwhelmed by the data it provided, including the extra charges for use of non-JR passes in between journeys. Therefore, should I buy regional passes or 14 day JR Pass covering all islands. Would the extra charges make the 14 day Pass more expensive?

Hello June,

It is great that you plan to visit Kyushu and Shikoku. As a frequent JR traveller myself, I can tell you that both are well worth visiting and a nice break from the busy city live found in Tokyo, Osaka and elsewhere.

The JR Pass will help you make nice savings compared to purchasing normal rail tickets. You can use the JR Pass Fare Calculator to find an approximate ticket cost of a single route or even your full itinerary. It is a lot easier than Hyperdia and I think you'll find it useful. The pass will give you the freedom to explore on your own page, get on the train whenever you like and not have to worry about buying any tickets.

The JR Pass covers Kyushu, Shikoku and all travel in between. The only area where you may have small extra charge is around Fuji. We have a details post here: http://www.jrpass.com/blogs/itinerary-tip-mt-fuji

Hope this helps,
Daniel
