Is the JR pass economical for our trip?

Hi. My family of six will be travelling to Japan in a few weeks, so I will need to purchase the 14-day JR passes soon.

My itinerary:
Hiroshima, then to Kyoto (with side trips to Osaka and Nara), then to Hakone, then to Tokyo.

Trips I think I can use the JR pass:
Hiroshima Airport to Hiroshima Station
Miyajima Ferry
Hiroshima Station to Kyoto Station
Kyoto Station to Osaka (and return)
Kyoto Station to Nara (and return)
Kyoto Station to Hakone
Hakone to Tokyo
Yamanote Line in Tokyo
Tokyo to Narita using Narita Express.

How far ahead can I reserve seats when I get to the exchange office? I already know some of the times we need to travel in order to connect with other shuttles. Can I get the seats all at the same time?

Is there a JR exchange office at the Hiroshima Airport so that I can get to Hiroshima Station?

Is there a website online (not a phone app) that I can find ticket prices? I need to know if buying a 14 day pass is most economical for us since we are a family of six, or if it's cheaper to use other buses/methods of transportation.

Also, where can I find timetables so that we don't stay too late in one city and find out there are no more trains back?

Thank you.

Hi there,

You could reserve all your seats at once when you activate the JR Pass, or at any other JR ticket window. It is best to bring a printed/written up list with all the trains you want to book, so the staff can do the bookings quickly for you.

There is no JR office station at Hiroshima airport, instead, take the shuttle bus from the airport to the station, then activate your JR Pass at the station.

For travel times, I recommend learning to plan with Hyperdia this way you can find any route/timetable and more. It's a great tool for planning with the JR Pass. We also have a useful interactive map with all JR lines included.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
