Is JR Pass worth it?

I am going to be travelling around Japan in March for nearly 2 weeks and am wondering if it is worth the investment. Here is my itinerary:

March 7: Haneda Airport to Shinjuku.
March 8-10: Shinjuku, Shibuya, Akihabara and maybe Ginza and Roppongi.
March 10: Tokyo to Osaka
March 11: Exploring Osaka
March 12: Universal Studios
March 13: Osaka to Kyoto and back.
March 14: Osaka to Kyoto and back.
March 15: Day trip to either Kobe or Nara
March 16: Explore Osaka.
March 17: Osaka to Tokyo
March 17-20: Explore Tokyo
March 20: Haneda Airport

Also,
1. How do I obtain the foreign JR Pass and what are the steps to getting it?
2. Roughly around how long does it take the receive it after ordering?
3. Can I use the pass for local trains go get around Tokyo area and Osaka area?
4. Is there anything I should know before arriving in Japan?
5. Any recommendations to add on to my itinerary like places to explore, etc?

Hi there,

I would have recommended a 7 day JR Pass if you would make the trip Tokyo - Osaka ...and return to Tokyo before the JR Pass expires. Right now this period is 8 days and using normal tickets would be better. As you don't do enough travel for the 14 day JR Pass to help you make savings.

3.) Yes, the urban JR Network in Tokyo, Osaka and elsewhere is included.

4.) Hard to say :)

5.) I can give you some specific recommendation if you let me know what you're interested in. Otherwise I just recommend reading as much as possible about the cities you visit and make a list of things that sound cool/interesting/worth while to you.
