Is it worth to buy JR PASS?

A JR Pass will be of great use here. Just going from Sapporo - Tokyo nearly pays for a 7 day JR Pass. With your other travel to Niigata, Aomori and Osaka, you'd make very good savings compared to purchasing normal tickets.

The JR Pass covers travel between all these places and you can even use the Hayabusa Shinkansen between Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto and Tokyo, this is the fastest train in Japan.

PS: Do you have a specific reason to visit Niigata? There's not a lot to do there in terms of tourism, you're time made better spend elsewhere.

Btw, 7day or 14 day JR Pass, which one is better? We'll be in Japan (Sapporo-Sendai-Tokyo-Shizuoka-Toyama-Matsuyama-Osaka) for 15 days.

Hi Andy,

Sendai is already great improvement, you can use the JR Pass from there for nice day trips to Matsushima and Yamadera.

You could also add a visit to Nagano or Kanazawa, the latter goes well together with Toyama.

I'd recommend a 14 day JR Pass for your trip 100%! You're traveling a lot and the pass will save you a ton, with or without Niigata :)
