How to use pass to go from Tokyo to Nagano

The normal fare for a one way ticket Tokyo - Nagano is ¥ 7,770, which is a direct Shinkansen route between Tokyo and Nagano stations. There's not really a pass that would help you make savings if your travel is limited to Tokyo - Nagano (and Jigokudani). So I would suggest buying normal tickets. An alternative would be to use an express bus from Tokyo or Shinjuku station, these will set you back around ¥ 4,000yen for one way but take about 90 longer to reach Nagano.

In reference to my above question, can I wait until I get to my hotel in Tokyo (Hilton) 3 days (Feb 12) before my trip to Nagano/ Jigokudani, to purchase the Japan rail ticket for Feb 15 and return on February 18?
Should I purchase the green seats?

Hi Dale Davis,

You could purchase the tickets just before departure, Feb 12-15th is not especially busy and obtaining seats should be not issue.

Traveling using Green Class comfortable and can be much more relaxed than Ordinary Class, at the same time it is optional though - most people will be more than fine. For reference, a ticket for Green Class is ¥ 10,460.
