I would like to travel on July 7 morning from Hiroshima to Beppu and July 8 afternoon travel from Beppu to Shinjuku in Tokyo? I use google map to find the route, but it recommended to use Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen Nozomi which I know JR Pass is not allowed. How do I get around the area using JR pass? Thanks.

Hi there,
Google Maps (unfortunately) is not a good resource when planning your Shinkansen journeys for the Japan Rail Pass. As it does not show the Hikari Shinkansen services on the Tokaido line - which you can use for free with the JR Pass.
Instead use Hyperdia is Navitime.
For travel times, I recommend learning to plan with Hyperdia this way you can find any route/timetable and more. It's a great tool for planning with the JR Pass. We also have a useful interactive map with all JR lines included.
