Hello,

My soon to be wife and I will be arriving in Tokyo on May 29 for our honeymoon. On the 30th we'll be heading to Kashikojima. On June 2 we're heading to Kyoto. Then June 5 to Takayama, and finally on June 8, back to Tokyo.

Do we need to purchase a rail pass for all of this or can we just buy the tickets on the day of travel? This is 12 nights so we'd need the 14 day pass, but we're only going to use the pass 4 times (6-8 if you include changing trains. What would you advise?

Thanks!

Hi there,

A 7-day JR Pass would have been a good option if you returned to Tokyo before the pass expired, but the travel days from the 30th - 8th, is longer. At the same time a 14 day JR Pass would not be cost effecient. Basically you are right in between. As such I think just buying normal tickets would make the best sense.

Kind regards,
Daniel
