My wife and I are flying out to Osaka and arriving on August 26 (4 days!)
I'm only learning about this insane deal of the JR pass. I've tried to buy it but it won't allow me to select the "date of use" on my day of arrival. Only from the August 28th.
Is it too late for me to buy the pass for the 26th? I'm also reading that the pass has to be mailed to me. Can we still buy it directly at Japan?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The date of use is only an indication, you can select the JR pass at any date within 3 months after issue date.
We ship to many countries within 1 business day, so there may still be enough time.
