First time travelling in japan and we're opt to DIY our travel, and honestly I'm a bit hesitant, rather afraid (of getting lost and stuck) as English is not really well accepted form of communication in japan. Kindly help with the JR pass system of travelling from here to there:

  1. How to activate JR Pass - Will be arriving via Haneda
  2. Can I use JR Pass from Haneda Airport to Tokyo center?
  3. If yes, please give details on what to do
  4. Tokyo to Kyoto via Hikari? Is there another transfer needed upon arrival in Kyoto station to go Fushimi Inari, Tofuku ji Temple and the likes.
  5. How to go back from Kyoto to Tokyo via JR pass?
  6. Is there a connection from Kyoto to Nara/Kobe/Hemeji using JR rails? If yes, may I know how?
  7. How to or rather is there a way using JR Pass from Tokyo station to Narita airport?
  8. JR pass is an unlimited ride within the travel period (7 days, 2 weeks, so on and forth) yes?
  9. How to use the JR pass? I mean is there a special entrance/exit for JR pass user in the station or will it be accepted just as ordinary cards?
  10. Can I book/made a seat reservation using JR pass? If yes, how?

Thanks in advance.

Hi there,

1.) Just follow the signs to railways and you'll find the JR East ticket office at Haneda. You can exchange the Pass there.

2.) Yes.

3.) Take the Tokyo Monorail to Hamamatsucho station (last stop of the monorail). From there you can use the JR Yamanote loop line to Tokyo station.

4.) Yes. Travel to Kyoto station is direct from Tokyo. You can use the local JR Nara line from there to Fushimi Inari etc.

5.) Take the Hikari Shinkansen directly from Kyoto.

6.) You can use the Shinkansen from Kyoto to Kobe and Himeji and a local train directly to Nara.

7.) Yes, you can use the Narita Express directly.

8.) Yes!

9.) You show the pass to the station attended when entering/exiting the station.

10.) Yes, see: https://www.jrpass.com/blogs/reserving-seats-boarding-the-bullet-train

Hope this helps :)
Daniel

Hello Daniel-San,

As I'm currently planning our way around and I'm still a bit confuse, can you please answer these questions?

  1. Our home based will be in Tokyo and our hotel will probably around Tokyo station (I'm still looking around which hotel are nearest from the station upon arrival). As I was looking the Tokyo Station via map/internet, it is quite daunting and a little big, and I'm not sure how and where should we go when we opt for the shinkansen via JR Pass going to Osaka/Kyoto. Can you kindly give me a little instruction about this, if you have time.

  2. Is the Tokyo Monorail you've mentioned above (from Haneda) included in the JR Pass?

Thanks in advance.
