Hello,
We are disembarking from a cruise in Yokohama on April 28th (yes, Golden Week!) and will continue our trip in Japan for an additional 12 days. We would like to purchase JRPasses (GreenPasses) to cover our trips to Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima, Takayama and Tokyo. We have some questions:
1) Our first port of call in Japan is on April 23rd in Sakaiminato. Can we exchange our XO for the JRPasses at the train station in Sakaiminato and make our seat reservations there as well?
2) What are the chances the seat reservations for GreenCars will be sold out during Golden Week?
3) If the GreenCars are sold out, can we stand in the GreenCars without a reservation?
4) Can we use our GreenPass in standard cars if we wait in a queue and there are seats available there?

GreenPass during Golden Week
Hi Linda,
1.) Sakaiminato is a really small town and you would not be able to exchange the JR Pass here but you can hop on the train to Yonago station (open 5:00-22:00) and exchange the passes there and make all the reservations for Golden week you want. Taking the train from Sakaiminato to Yonago takes ~45min and 320yen/one way.
2.) Hard to say, will depend on the route and time of travel. Still it will be very busy and there's a good chance that seats are fully booked on the day of travel. I would get your tickets 2-4 days in advance where possible.
3 & 4.) I'm not a 100% sure if you can stand in the Green Car room but you can always take a non-reserved seat or see if any ordinary seats are available.
U That said, if you reserve your seats either in Yonago or on the first day elsewhere for the rest of your trip, then I do not think you would have any problems.
