We have booked flights into Narita arriving 8.30am on Sat 29th April. Our plan was to activate our JR passes at the airport and then get the Express to Tokyo and then shinkasen onto Nagano that morning. As it is Golden Week (didn't realise this till after we had booked flights) are we going to be able to get reserved seats on these trains and would it make much difference to get Green Passes? If not would unreserved work at this time of year? We are then planning to move to Kyoto on Tue 2nd May, again if we sort out the tickets on arrival on the 29th is this likely to be OK or again would having a Green Pass give us more certainty?

Or alternatively would it be better to rearrange our trip to stay in Tokyo at the beginning so we get more lead time on buying tickets.

Thank you

Hi there,

Golden Week is always a busy period, especially the weekend. I would get reserved seats for sure in this period.

I do not think that you should buy a Green Pass for just getting a better chance on seats. If you want buy a Green Class Pass then you will want to travel in Green Class. Most trains have only 1 green car about 7 or more normal carriages.

I do think it would be saver to stay a day in Tokyo or be flexible with your bookings.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
