Hi!
Is it a crazy idea to stop in Matsushima on the way to Tsurunoyu? I'll be travelling in the end of September, and when I checked timetable, it looks pretty compicated if possible. I can leave Nikko early, but have to arrive before dinner time to Tsurunoyu. Is it possible to squeeze matsushima in my plan?
From Nikko to Tsurunoyu through Matsushima

Hello :D
Just to get a perspective of the distances I pinned them on a map. I also checked possible time tables but I feel like it would almost be impossible. I think that you could do it but - unless you just want to pick up something there - I don't think that there would be enough to do anything else.
Hope this helps!
Daniel

Thank you Daniel! In that case I'm skipping it, mission almost impossible is not for me. I prefer seeing less places, it just looked like almost on the way, and I booked 2 nights in Tsurunoyu onsen and I'm afraid we'll be bored there.
Hi again!
I've got to say sorry here, when checking your route I somehow switched Matsushima around with an other Matsushima just south of Tokyo.
I've done a recheck of the route, including timetables in Hyperdia and as it turns out. It would be a viable option.
Travel from Nikko - Matsushima is about 3H and from Matsushima - Tsurunoyu is probably an other 3H or so, including the bus. This would mean that you'd have at least a couple of hours to explore Matsuhima.
Again sorry for my mistake in the previous post!
Daniel

I also checked Hyperdia, so you mean getting from Nikko at 7:29 to Matsushima, getting there at 10:25 and then to Tazawako at 13:57, then reaching it at 16:07, right? Do you know how much time it'll take us to get from station to the onsen?
Maybe you can advice the option of getting to Matsushima on the way back from to Nikko - here I had a problem of finding appropriate trains.
Yes that would be a possibility. I could not find the exact travel time with the bus but apparently it leaves once per hour and the last bus departs around 6 in the evening.

Do you mean a route like this?.

Like this, but with a couple of hours in Matsushima
I see, Hyperdia does not allow to plan in a stop over. So it's best to split up the journey in two.
and Part two.
This would give you 4 hours to explore Matsushima.

Hi, Daniel! I've been told that best option to see Matsushima is to get off on MATSUSHIMAKAIGAN instead of Matsushima station. What do you think?

Or more exactly - from Nikko to MATSUSHIMAKAIGAN , then using a boat get to Hon-Shiogama Station, and continue from there to Tazawako. So if I leave Nikko at 8:10 a.m, I'll be at MATSUSHIMAKAIGAN at 11, and I'll have 3 hrs till the train at 14:15 from Hon-Shiogama, and be at 16:00 at Tazawako.
The boat part is a little risky here, because I have no timetables.
Is it real and is it enough time?
