can i use the Japan rail pass (not regional) to go from Hakata to Jr namba
would i first need to go from hakata to shin osaka and then take another train to namba?

Hi there,
Yes, this is covered by the JR Pass.
You would indeed take the Shinkansen to Shin-Osaka, then local JR lines to JR-Namba.
