Our family ( 2 adults, 3 kids between 5 and 9 years ) want to make a roundtrip from Tokyo to Kyoto in April. Is it worthwile to buy the railpass? And is there any discount for kids or do I have to buy 5 tickets ( for nearly 1,000 euro; that looks quite expensive for only 1 roundtrip ).

Hi there,

Yes I do think that it would worth considering a JR Pass. A return ticket Tokyo - Kyoto is about the same as a 7 Day JR Pass, which basically gives you 7 days of unlimited travel for the same price. You can use the JR Pass also for local travel around Tokyo on JR lines and from travel to and from the Airport.

Children below the age of 12 are half price and children below the age of 6 (aged 1 to 5) travel for free.

Please see our blog post for more information about traveling with children.

Hope this helps!
