Does usage of the card have to be on consecutive days?

Does a 7-day JR pass mean usage is for 7 consecutive days OR a total of 7 days? If for example I use it on a Monday then I do not use it the next day, Tuesday - did I forfeit its 2nd day of usage and I only have 5 days to go on the pass OR do I still have 6 days remaining on the pass?

Thank you.
