Hi there,

We’ll be going to Japan for a month, and I’m just wondering a few things:
Should get the 21 Day JR pass, or a shorter JR pass + regional pass?
Should I get a pass for Hokkaido and Kanazawa/Takayama regions?

Itinerary:

20 Oct - Narita Airport
<Fly to Sapporo>
21-25 Oct - Sapporo (Day trips to Noboribetsu, Otaru & Jozankei)
26-27 Oct - Hakodate
<Fly to Osaka>
28 Oct-2 Nov - Osaka (Day trips to Kyoto, Kobe — not sure if we should go to Hiroshima. Will it make the 21 day pass worth it?)
3 Nov - Kanazawa
4 Nov - Shirakawago/Takayama
5-7 Nov - Matsumoto (Day trips to Alpine Route and Kamikochi)
8 Nov - Karuizawa
9-17 Nov - Tokyo (Day trips to Nikko, Hakone, Kamakura & Mt Fuji)

Your advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hi there,

That's a very extensive itinerary you have there :)

For the JR Pass, I recommend checking if you can make savings without JR Fare Calculator. By flying the longer routes, you take away much of the cost efficiency of the Japan Rail Pass.

For Hokkaido, you can look at a 3 day Hokkaido Rail Pass to Nobori-Betsu and Hakodate.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
