We are arriving in Narita airport on 11th April for a four day base in Ginza to explore Tokyo. Leaving Tokyo on 15th April going to Takayama for 2 nights, then on heading to Kyoto on 17th for 4 day stay. Returning to Tokyo on 21st April., 10 days in total.

Could you please advise if the aforementioned routes are covered by JR. Also don’t know if we should purchase 7 or 14 day pass. We are planning to travel around Tokyo, Kyoto and to Nara whilst in each location.

Which tickets would you recommend to purchase? Is JR pass valid for travel within Tokyo and Kyoto.

Thank you in advance.

Hi there,

The JR Pass will cover travel to all these cities and you will make good savings compared to buying normal tickets at the same time.

I suggest looking at a 7-day JR Pass and use it for travel to Takayama, Kyoto and back to Tokyo. Then buy local tickets for travel around Tokyo itself.

Hope this helps :)

Thank you for your response. Does that mean that JR pass is not valid for travel/ moving around within Tokyo and its outskirts like Mnt Fuji, Hakone etc.? Is there a similar ticket that can be purchased for that so we would not need to get one every time getting on public transport?

Thank you
