My son will turn 12 in the last few days of the 21 day period of our pass.

Is that going to be a problem?

Also, he is already 6 feet tall at 11, and I anticipate he will constantly have to show ID to
Prove he’s still a kid. Instead of getting his passport out constantly, would places in Japan accept a proof
Of age card?

Thanks!

Hi there,

You do need to carry your passport when you when using the JR Pass. This is in addition to the Japanese law that states that foreign visitors must carry their passport with them at all times.

Your son can use a child pass, as long as the issue date was before his 12th birthday.

Kind regards,
Daniel
