Can I use JR East Pass - Tohoku Area to travel from Nagoya to Mishima and Kusatsu

Hi, I have a 6-day trip to Japan coming up, please review my itinerary below and advise if the JR East Pass is suitable.

Day 1 Arrive from Taipei to Nagoya (9 p.m.)

Day 2 Nagoya to Mishima, stay there

Day 3 Mishima to Karuizawa, stay there

Day 4 Karuizawa to Kusatsu Onsen, stay there

Day 5 Kusatsu Onsen

Day 6 Kusatsu to Haneda Airport

The JR East pass is much cheaper, if the pass doesn't cover Nagoya, should I buy a single ticket for that sector and use the JR East pass for the rest of the trip?

Hi there,

Most of these places are not within the JR East Area Pass and would not be a good buy for your trip. Cities like Nagoya and Mishima are within the JR Central area.

For more details on regional passes, see our Guide on Regional Passes.

Kind regards,
Daniel

Daniel-San,

Are you suggesting that I buy the national JR pass?

Thank you

Hi again,

No, I think the best option would be to look at a combination of normal tickets + a regional pass like the Tokyo Wide Pass.

Kind regards :)

Daniel-San,

I did spend much time looking at the various JR passes but am still unable to decide on what combination yo go after.

Does the Tokyo wide pass cover Mishima, Karuizawa, Kusatsu onsen and the Haneda airport.

If it does, I just need to purchase a normal ticket for the sector from Nagoya to Mishima.

I will be in Nagoya on 30 June, prior to Japan, I will be in Taiwan from next Tuesday, 35 June, it's therefore urgent for me to secure the JR pass before I leave Singapore. I have like, 2-3 days left...

It was a last-minute vacation, and I apologise for the many questions asked.

Thank you.

My apologies for the typos. I meant to say 25 June.

Best regards

Hi,

Have a look at the Tokyo Wide Pass map:
https://www.jreast.co.jp/e/tokyowidepass/

It does not cover Mishima but you could start using it from Atami, which is pretty close. It would cover travel to Karuizawa and Kusatsu. You can buy this pass upon arrival, so no hurry :)

Then for the rest, I'd buy tickets as needed.

Kind regards,
Daniel

Thank you very much, that really helps.

I was just looking at the map for the Tokyo-wide pass, and yes, all the places I mentioned will be covered except for Mishima.

Nice also to know that the Tokyo wide pass can be purchased upon arrival.

Best regards

Hi again, Daniel-san,

I am assuming that the Tokyo wide pass cannot be purchased at the Chu airport or JR Nagoya station.

Can the pass be purchased at Atami's JR station then? Atami will be my first stop on the route of the Tokyo wide pass.

Best regards,
Lanley

HI Lanley,

I'd double check with JR East.

This is one of few passes we don't sell directly on JRPass.com or provide support for.

Kind regards,
Daniel

Daniel-san, can I pick up the Tokyo wide-pass from Atami and activate it from there?

Apologies for chasing as I will leave my country in 2 days. If I end up having to buy the nationwide JR pass, I have to buy it within these 2 days.

Many thanks,
Lanley
