I arrive in Japan on May 16th. Can I purchase the pass online and access it all through my mobile device? Also, where can I find the prices for individual rides from city to city? I’m just wondering if it is worthwhile to buy the jr rail pass or to buy individual tickets each time. We are planning to go to Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and Hiroshima.

You can use the JR Pass Fare Calculator to find an approximate ticket cost of a single route or even your full itinerary.
Either a 7 or 14 day JR Pass would likely help you make savings with the above travel. Note that the JR Pass is a physical ticket and not digital.
