Advice on using the JR Pass for our itinerary?

Hi there!

We will be arriving in Tokyo early in the morning on the 22nd of April (Day 1). We would then be leaving Tokyo for Kyoto on the 25th (Day 4). Our next stop would be to Nara on the 28th (Day 7), just for one night. On the 29th (Day 8), we will be travelling to Osaka from Nara and spend 3 more days in Osaka before leaving for the Kansai airport on 2 May (Day 11).

Is the 7 days JR pass worth it? We were thinking of getting the 7 days pass + the 3 day Kansai pass. Alternatively, we were considering to activate the 7 day pass on the day we leave Tokyo for Kyoto. What is the best way to maximise the usage of our pass?

Please let us know if there are better alternatives!!

Hi there,

Right now a JR Pass would not help you make savings. The cost of a 7 day JR Pass is about the same as a normal return Tokyo - Kyoto, though you only travel one way. A JR Pass could be worth it if you add a day trip to Hiroshima. If not, just buy a one way ticket to Kyoto.

The Kansai Area Pas can be a good option if you use it for travel to Kansai Airport and around Kansai itself.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
