We will be in Japan for a total of 11 days. We fly into Fukuoka on July 22nd. We will stay in the Fukuoka area for 3 days and then head to Hiroshima to stay overnight on July 25th. Then, to Osaka from July 26th through 28th and then to Tokyo from July 29th to July 31st and then check out and go to Narita airport (using JR pass) on August 1st. So, total of 11 days. Does it make sense to buy the 14 day pass? Or, would I save money by buying a 7 day pass and paying out of pocket for rail during my 3 days in Fukuoka at the beginning of our trip and paying for trip to Hiroshima out of pocket (from Fukuoka to Hiroshima) OR (paying out of pocket for train from Tokyo to Narita airport on August 1st) so that I can buy the 7 day pass instead? Or, should I just buy the 14 day pass for our 11 day stay? Also, can we use the JR rail pass in Fukuoka to Nagasaki, and Fukuoka to Oita? In other words, is it worthwhile to have a JR pass in the Fukuoka area? Also, can I use JR pass to go from Fuluoka to Hiroshima?
7 day versus 14 day? Is JR pass worthwhile in Fukuoka area and surroundings?

Hello there,
I would certainly go for the 7 day JR Pass and start using it when you travel to Hiroshima. This way you will make the best use of your pass. Especially if you see the difference in ticket price (see below).
Fukuoka - Hiroshima ¥ 8,740
Tokyo - Narita Airport ¥ 2,820
You could also consider a 14 day JR Pass if you plan to make day trips trough Kyushu. For instance a trip to Nagasaki, Buppu (Oita) or Kagoshima would quickly make the upgrade from 7 day to 14 day JR Pass worth it's price. However the JR Pass is not put to best use if you stay locally within Fukuoka.
Hope this helps!
Daniel
