Planning our honeymoon to Japan for 14 days from March 24th 2018 to April 7th 2018 and trying to figure out if we could possibly get by with just a 7 Day Rail Pass for traveling purposes and to save some money. Also any travel tips for our itinerary below would be greatly appreciated for first timers coming from the US.

March 24th - Land in Narita Airport, heading to Tokyo for 3 Nights
March 27th - Travel to Hakone for 2 nights - Was possibly planning on taking Odakyu Limited Express Romancecar which we know is not covered with JR Pass, it seems harder to get to Hakone on Japan Rail, but maybe we are confused?
March 29th - Travel from Hakone to Osaka directly if possible or head back to Tokyo to get to Osaka for 2 nights
March 30th - Day Trip from Osaka to Nara Park
March 31st - Fly from Osaka International Airport to Naha / Okinawa Island for 2 nights
April 2nd - Fly from Naha / Okinawa Island to Osaka International Airport and head to Kyoto for 2 nights
April 4th - Head from Kyoto back to Tokyo for 2 nights before flying out at Narita back to the US on April 6th

We are already on a tight budget as it is so we don't want to pay for days we are not using the pass though we are not sure if it is cost effective to not get the pass either or make a 7 day pass work based on this timeframe. If we do not need the JR Pass for the entire 14 days our trip is there any way we can get away with the 7 days based on this plan above? There is not any way to pause or defer when our Pass is activated? Or can we pick up our Passes somewhere else besides the airport to defer it for several days?

Hi there,

Japan is absolutely a great place to celebrate your honeymoon.

For travel to Hakone using the JR Pass, you can use the Shinkansen from Tokyo - Odawara (Hakone). This only takes 36 minutes and brings you to the base of Hakone. From there, local transport is required to explore the area and not included in the JR Pass. Using the Romance car by Odakyu is a great way to get your trip started and you can start using your JR Pass later for the best effect. You can activate the JR Pass at Odawara station as well.

Then from Hakone to Osaka, go to Odawara. This is the Shinkansen station for Hakone and you can use the Hikari directly to Osaka. Then use the 7 day JR Pass from March 29th to April 4th. Here all rail travel would be covered.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thank you Daniel this information it is very helpful, we were also considering going to Tokyo Disney or Universal Studios, would the JR Pass be helpful with either of these trips out of their respective cities??

Also do you happen to know anything about the public transportation options for Naha / Okinawa even though JR Pass does not work there? Especially trying to figure out how to get from Naha to the Aquarium and we know it is a long trip.

Any information you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,
Kristen

Hi Kirsten,

The JR Pass can be used to travel both to Disney land (Maihama station) and Universal studio.

There are no train lines around Okinawa, as such the pass is not very useful there. Personally I love getting on a bicycle or mountain bike and explore Okinawa. The island is easy to explore on bike and it could be a cost efficient way to travel.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
