I this like the Eurail pass that is for 7 days of train travel over a 30 day window or is it only for a 7 day block of time? I am traveling with my family for 14 days in June, but we are only traveling a few days (6) spread over the 14 days (We are staying in Tokyo and Kyoto several days).

Hi there,
The JR Pass is counted in consecutive days, that means it starts counting down from the first day of use.
That said, you do not need to use the JR Pass every day to make good use of the pass. For instance traveling Tokyo - Kyoto - Hiroshima - Osaka - Tokyo would more than pay for the 14 day R Pass.
Hope this helps,
Daniel
