We are arriving in Japan at Narita airport on Feb. 16. We will be staying in Tokyo until the 18th and then planning on going to Osaka and Kyoto on Tuesday for one night taking the bullet train. We depart from Haneda airport on the 20th. Does it pay for us to buy the JR pass? Also do we have enough time and will we be able to make a reservation for the bullet for just 2 days in advance?

Hi there,

Yes, a 7-day Japan Rail Pass would help you make savings here.

As the cost of a 7-day JR Pass is similar to the cost of a return ticket Tokyo - Kyoto using the Shinkansen. Any extra travel is basically free :)

I hope you find this useful,
Daniel

Thanks Daniel! This is all so confusing. Sorry, I just reposted because I didn’t see your reply. Can you always get a reservation for the day you want to ride the bullet train? Is morning easy to get on?
