Hello, I am wanting to purchase the 21 day pass for my family of 5. I’m just wondering if I do this can I pre book seats on the Shinkansens before I arrive in japan and activate my passes. I am just concerned I will miss out on these trains for popular routes if I wait until I arrive in January. Thank you

Hello there,
We don't have the option yet to reserve seats online but purchases made through www.jrpass.com. Instead, we recommend making seat reservations the moment that you arrive in Japan and have activated your pass.
Trains rarely sell out on normal travel days, and you should have no issue getting seats together when you book your tickets 1-2 days ahead of time in Japan. Of course, this can be done sooner too.
