Hi

We are arriving into Tokyo Haneda on 19 Oct and departing from the same airport on 3 Nov. Traveling with a 2-year-old and 5-year-old kid. As we are traveling with 2 kids snd 2 large luggages, we prefer less transfers and less walking from airport or train station to hotel.

Our plan is;

19 Oct airport limousine bus to Hotel sunroute Plaza Shinjuku in Tokyo
20 Oct day trip to Kamakura and Enoshima
21 Oct Explore Tokyo till time to leave Shinjuku for Kyoto
22 to 25 Oct Explore Kyoto including Arashiyama
25 Oct Kyoto to Takayama
26 Oct Day trip from Takayama to Shirakawago
27 Oct Leave Takayama for Hotel Red planet Asakusa
28, 29 Oct day trip to Fuji 5 lake or Hakone
30, 31 Oct Disneyland and Disneysea
1-3 Nov Explore Tokyo
3 Nov take Asakusa line to Haneda Airport

  1. Based on our itinerary, should we buy the 7days or 14 days JR pass for 2 adults and 1 child?
  2. Will our 2 year old need a JR pass?
  3. Any other passes that we need?
  4. From Kyoto to Takayama, is it faster and easier to go by Nagano or by Toyama?
  5. Will we get to see the beautiful autumn foliage in any of the places that we are visiting?

Looking forward to your advice on the above questions.

Thanks.

Hello there,

That looks like a very enjoyable trip!

Going to your questions:
1.) I think a 7 day JR Pass would work best from Oct 22nd to 28th. This is the part where you travel the most and where you can make the best savings using a Japan Rail Pass.
[ 2.) No, but some restrictions apply. For details see: JR Passes for childeren.

3.) The JR Pass will be the backbone for your trip but you can look at local passes elsewhere. Think of the Enoshima-Kamakura Free Pass and Fuji Hakone Pass.

4.) The best way Kyoto to Takayama is taking the Hikari Shinkansen from Kyoto to Nagoya and using the Hida Wide View express from there to Takayama. This is also a very scenic ride.

5.) It will depend on the weather but your chances are very good.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for your prompt reply. Appreciate it.

Just to clarify, do you mean that we should use the pass when we leave Tokyo for Kyoto on 21 July and from Takayama to Tokyo on 27 July?

Should we travel from Takayama to Tokyo through Nagano? We will be staying at Asakusa in Tokyo.

Is there any passes that you recommend for traveling within Kyoto and within Tokyo?

Regards,
Geraldine
