Hello!

Traveling in November with a 3 week itinerary. Trying to determine if I need the 14 or 21 day pass.

Nov 4 - 10 - Tokyo (landing in Haneda, staying in Shinjuku
Nov 10-14 - Kyoto
Nov 14 - 17 - Osaka
Nov 17 - 19 Fukuoka
Nov 19-22 - Hiroshima
Nov 22 - back to Haneda to leave.

I believe I will def need/have value if I did the 14 day pass from 11/9 - 11/22 when I depart Tokyo to journey south.

My question - would there be value if I got the 21 day pass for my time in Tokyo considering the below:

11/4 - travel from Haneda to Shinjuku on Limo bus
11/5 - explore shibuya, asakusa, harijuku (possible group bus tour)
11/6 - day trip to Disney Sea
11/7 day trip to Hakone
11/8 day trip to Kamakura
11/9 relax in area around hotel

Would the JR pass be of any value in the above itinerary or would I be better to get an IC card and load it for the subways and individual trains? I would be getting an IC card anyway, to be clear for subway travel. Just didn't know if the JR pass would save me time/money especially for those day trips to Disney, Hakone and Kamakura.

Hi there,

A JR Pass would give you very good value for money on the trips to Kyoto, Osaka, Fukuoka, Hiroshima and back to Tokyo. Local travel however does not cost a lot and generally using normal tickets works there fine, for instance on local train within Tokyo.

To answer the question for the 21-day JR Pass. There is little difference, you are likely around the break-even point. This is the because the upgrade from 14-day to 21 day JR Pass is relatively cheap, around 13.000yen which can be covered pretty quickly by using the Shinkansen to Hakone and other local travel. I would say, get the 14 day JR Pass for sure and maybe the 21 day JR Pass if you just don't want to think about buying local tickets.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
