Dear Daniel-san,

Our family will arrive Tokyo and plan to explore the Golden route for 14 days. I'm wondering if we're better off to buy the 14-day JR pass or should we buy the regional JR West pass and pay individual tickets to travel from/to Tokyo. Here is our itinerary and I appreciate if you can advise us the most cost effective way to purchase the JR pass.

July 12 arrives Haneda
July 13 Tokyo
July 14 Day trip to Mt Fuji
July 15 Day trip to Disney Sea
July 16-July 19: Kyoto (stay 4 days)
July 20 Osaka (stay 4 days with daily trips)
July 21 Day trip to Kobe and Himeji
July 22 Day trip to Nara
July 23 Day trip to Hiroshima and Miyajima
July 24 back to Tokyo
July 25 Kamakura
July 26 depart from Haneda

Thank you so much!
Becky

Hi Becky,

I'll keep this simple, a regional pass makes sense if you stay within one region. You will be traveling all over Japan! As such, only a Japan Rail Pass will be a good option. You may also be interested in this article: https://www.jrpass.com/blog/expert-guide-to-regional-japan-rail-passes

My advice is to use a 14-day Japan Rail Pass on this route.

Kind regards,
Daniel
