Dear Daniel-San:
I thought I submitted a question but couldn't find it after submitting, so forgive me if this is a repeat post. We are traveling to Japan December 15th for about 12 days, wondering if we should get the 7 or 14 day pass. On the 15th, We are getting from Narita to Shinjuku first, then spend few days in Tokyo, then on the 19th we are going to Hakone, and then on the 23rd, we are going to Kyoto, and then we are back to Narita airport on the 27th.

I heard that there are lots of cheaper travel options within Tokyo, so some people would activate the pass later so just buy a 7 day pass? (although that would mean we might need to leave Tokyo 2days later, haha, so not sure that would work out)
any suggestions would be very appreciated. ありがとございました

Hi Cecilia,

A 7 day JR Pass would be a good option if you can include the route Hakone - Kyoto - Tokyo - Narita with it. This is the part of your travel plan that costs the most in terms of rail travel and where a JR Pass could help you make savings.

Local travel within Tokyo does indeed not cost much and buying normal tickets or using a travel card like Suica works well.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Dear Daniel-san:
that is very helpful. Thank you. A couple of more details: I heard the fastest train travel option from Kyoto to Tokyo is not included by the pass? Also I read somewhere the single trip ticket from Hakone to kyoto is between 90 to 120 dollars? Why would there be a difference of rate, is that depending on whether it is fast or makes many stops? or depending the time of day?

and finally children under 6 doesn't require tickets?
thank you again

Hi again!

Could you tell me where you read these above statements? It is hard to comment on things I don't know the context of.

That said, the USD price can be different depending on exchange rate. Also train tickets can differ a bit depending on high/low season, type of train used and whether you pay for a seat reservations.

Children below the age of 6, can indeed travel for free, as long as there is 1 adult per child.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Dear Daniel San:
On this page, it said that the Nozomi line is not covered by JR Pass? https://trulytokyo.com/how-to-travel-from-tokyo-to-kyoto/

As for the price, I guess it is normal to have some differences between different times. it seems like normally it is about 120 dollars one way between Tokyo to Kyto, or between Kyoto and Hakone (I mean for the rides covered by the JR Pass, but if we paid separately without the JR Pass)

Dear Cecillia,

Yes the Nozomi train service is indeed not covered, we also mention this on our Japan Rail Pass product page. However you can use the Hikari train service instead, the trains are the same, only the Hikari stops at a couple more stops along the route. The cost for a one way Tokyo - Kyoto is about 14.000yen and can sometimes also be a bit more or less, depending on high/low season and whether you have reserved seat.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
