Hi,

My family (2 adults, 1 teenage, 1 child) plans to be in Japan in Dec 4 - 14 this year (free and easy).

We will stay in Osaka for the 1st 5 nights (in Namba) and Kyoto (near Nishiki Market) for another 5 nights before we head back home in Singapore. We are checking what is the best option (what pass to use) to travel in Japan based on our itinerary.

Here is our rough Itinerary.

Day 1 - Kansai Airport (morning flight) - Osaka (explore around Osaka - various extractions)
Day 2 - Osaka (explore around Osaka - Osaka Castle and various extractions)
Day 3 - Osaka (universal Studio - whole day)
Day 4 - Himeiji Castle and Kobe (travel from Osaka) - taking Shinkansen as an experience from Osaka to Himeiji for an experience the family.
Day 5 - Cup Noodle Museum and Meeting up friends in Osaka
Day 6 - Osaka --> Kyoto (explore Kyoto)
Day 7 - Kyoto (explore within Kyoto)
Day 8 - Arashiyama Bamboo Grove and Monkey Park, Toei Kyoto Studio Park (from Kyoto)
Day 9 - Nara and Uji Kyoto (Tea Town) (from Kyoto)
Day 10 - Kyoto (free and easy)
Day 11 - Kyoto --> Kansei Airport (afternoon flight)

First 2 days, we plan to get Osaka 2-day Amazing Pass. But for the rest of the trips, I am not sure if Kaisen Thru Pass or JR West Kaisai Rail Pass (5 day) is worth getting starting from the day 4 (Himeiji and Kobe day trip) and use ICOCA card in between the rest of the travelling where pass can't be used.

Any advice?

Hi Veradej,

There are so many types of passes around Kansai, all with their own advantages and limitations that even for me it is hard to keep track. I therefore just limit myself to the options available through JR, in this case JR-West.

The only option that would be worth looking into here is the JR Kansai Area Pass it proves very good value if you plan on doing day trips, especially to cities like Himeji and Kobe. The only downside is that it does not include the Shinkansen.

Kind regards,
Daniel
