questions & answers: using the japan rail pass

should i buy the jr pass or jr west pass?

Should I buy the JR pass or JR West pass?

Will like to seek assistance and advice in regards to getting a JR pass. I was initially intending to get a 7 day JR pass but my Kyoto and Osaka duration will exceed the 7 day limit. Within Kyoto, Nara and Osaka, I was thinking of getting the JR West regional pass for 2 days since I am heading Nara and next day to Osaka from Kyoto.

Any advice or suggestion will be appreciated.

22 Nov: Haneda airport to Tokyo
23 Nov: Tokyo to Nasu and back.

24 Nov: Tokyo to Kyoto
26 Nov: Kyoto to Nara

27 Nov: Kyoto to Osaka
28 Nov: Osaka to aquarium and other sightseeing places of interest.

1 Dec: Osaka to Tokyo
5 Dec: Tokyo to Haneda airport

Hi there,

This is a tricky one! I checked your itinerary for the best possibility but would advise just buying tickets as you travel. The 7 day JR pass would be very nice if you could make the return within 7 days but that would mean re-planning. Have you considered taking a late train on the evening of the 30th back to Tokyo? If that would not be possible, then normal tickets would be the best.

Hope this helps!

Dear Daniel-san,

If I choose to go Miyajima during my Osaka stay, it would be worth buying the JR pass. However, should I buy 7 days or 14 days?

Hi again!

Then the 14 day JR Pass would be well worth it. Going to Hiroshima and Miyajima costs over 22,000yen without the JR Pass. So going for the 14 day pass would be a no brainer!
