Hi there,

I do think a 7 day JR Pass would be a great option if you can at least cover the following with it:

Tokyo - Yuzawa ¥ 6,670
Yuzawa - Tokyo ¥ 6,670
Tokyo - Gotemba ¥ 4,840
Gotemba - Tokyo ¥ 4,840
Tokyo - Kyoto ¥ 13,910

For a total of ¥ 36,930 or at least ¥ 7,820 in savings, as the 7 day JR Pass is ¥ 29,110. This is excluding any other local travel you may do with it, which will add to savings made.

Trains to Gala Yuzawa on News Years day may be busy, so try to reserve tickets 2-3 days in advance. For your free day on 02/01, consider making a visit to Nikko. It is an amazing visit to make and will get the best out of your time in Japan and the JR Pass.

For Kyoto, just do Kyoto. I honestly think you would need more than 1 day to see all of the city, so adding Nara would not be something I recommend.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
