questions & answers: using the japan rail pass

is it a good idea to get the jr pass based on my schedule??

is it a good idea to get the JR pass based on my schedule??

Hi all,
I am trying to decide if buying a JR pass is worth it based on my schedule.
I am spending most of my time in Tokyo.

my route will be something as follows:

day 1- Narita Airport to Tokyo.
day 2 -3 exploring Tokyo.
day 4 - day trip to Nagano ( round trip)
day 5 - Tokyo
day 6- travel to Kyoto from Tokyo station really early - explore kyoto
day 7-8 - explore Kyoto
day 9 - travel back to tokyo and then to the Narita Airport. ( need to be there at 4pm )

I think my rail traveling is not as much , I would like to know your opinion if the JR pass is my best option or independent tickets will be better.
I will be in japan for a 9 day total so buying the 14 day JR pass might be too much.

for what i have read seem the JR pass won’t be of much use while moving around Tokyo itself.

thanks for the help

Hi JC,

Getting a JR Pass for your itinerary is actually a great idea. However I would not go for a 14 day JR Pass but use a 7 day JR Pass instead and use it to cover travel to Nagano, Kyoto and back to Tokyo. This way you can save a lot of money compared to purchasing normal tickets. The 7 day JR Pass is about the same price as a normal return ticket Tokyo - Kyoto, so you basically get all the other travel for free.

Hop this helps!

Thanks for the quick response Daniel.
I will go ahead and get the JR pass.
